I have 2 boys, and I remember when my first son was born thinking I was being jipped in the clothes dept. Whole sides of stores were devoted to girls, the racks in the middle, girls; I now sing a different tune. I can't believe the "clothes" they pass off as childrens. My good friend (and mother to my oldest's "gf"/bff) and I go shopping and she has to by 2-3 sizes larger and bring in the waist just to have proper "bottom coverage" (as my friend calls it) and so that the pants/shorts are not skin tight. I won't even start on the underwear situation.. Girls can't be girls anymore. They are expected to want to the frilly, pink, glittery and do their nails instead of get dirt under them in the backyard..

I totally agree. It actually gets worse as they get older I think. Like why do we need La Senza girl? That just seems like all kinds of wrong.

My biggest gripe is shoes. Boys shoes have solid soles, for running and climbing in. Girls shoes have slippery, thin soles--ballet flats, etc.--which are completely inappropriate for playing actively. Apparently girls don't need to run and climb. Nice message...

Great, I am not the only mum who finds it ridiculous about the swimsuit situation! My daughter is turning seven and it is difficult to find suitsuits with decent covering. She is seven, I do not need frilly stuff but I do not need inappropiate stuff either. My daughter goes to swimming class and there are children wearing bikinis and I do not get it!
Totally agree with the high heel situation too.

I can only imagine how much it hurt each time your daughter asked for the cat and you had to explain over and over again that she had died. That is almost worse than the actually death. Sorry.

since most of my daughter's swimsuit occasions are 1) pool period school,ie during fall/winter, 2) playing in the backyard or 3) at a waterpark, we both prefer her in a two piece, rash guard like swimsuit, or at least a swim shirt with boy shorts. they keep her warmer in cold water, protected from sun during the summer and free from grass- or slide-burns on her bum when playing in water. unity matey she's outgrown the last set I found in pink w colorful polka dots and I haven't found anything yet except in the 'boy' colours she doesn't like as much. the alternative is one of the myriad skimpy frilly string bikinis
